I’ve had a pretty busy week eating lots and exploring new (and visiting old) vegan eateries and enjoying every morsel, so expect lots more restaurant reviews appearing on here soon! As of today, I’ve been vegan for 6 months and 13 days, and it’s been one interesting and eye-opening journey. There are so many more companies catching on to the vegan wave and starting to offer more cruelty free and vegan options in all aspects of our lives, the most important one being food, but the hidden ones like makeup, skincare and household products are also things we need to think about. A quick message to say thanks for stopping by my blog! If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that for the last 3 and a half years, I was blogging under the name Life of a DIY Shopaholic.
For the last few years, I was (and still am) interested in crafts and sewing and that will never change. I will still continue to feature tutorials and post about craft and sewing projects I’m working on. Since becoming vegan though over 6 months ago, I’ve realised the lifestyle opened up a whole new world for me.
I know how daunting it can be for non-vegans (and new vegans) to navigate around what it means to be vegan, what to buy and what to avoid. Sewing/crafting and veganism are now both really big parts of my life that I feel are important to share, hence why I felt the need to re-brand my blog to become Oh Sew Vegan.
Obviously being vegan, this means that I will be featuring more eco-friendly sewing and craft projects that do not involve use of any animal-derived materials (such as silk, leather or suede).
If you are still interested in reading about my other shenanigans, thoughts on mindfulness and fitness, I will be blogging under A Blogger’s Musings although Oh Sew Vegan will, of course, be my primary focus.

I don’t usually eat too many protein products even though I should be diligently consuming protein before and after a workout. Since starting BodyCombat almost 5 years ago (see my previous post about it here), I’ve since also been doing BodyPump (here) and BodyBalance as well as kickboxing classes racking it up to 5-hours of classes a week. I had been making up protein shakes using sachets from my Purition vegan trial box (see my review for it here), but I find sometimes it’s a snack right after class that I need to curb those cravings.
When I realised the whey protein shake powder contained milk, I realised I needed to find another alternative which I did in Purition, but what about snack bars? I now couldn’t just stop in the local shops on my way home to snack on a chocolate bar. Luckily during my Veganuary month (see here), one of their proud sponsors Pulsin’ put together an exclusive Veganuary snack box for participants.
I had been given a themed subscription box before as a birthday present and also subscribed for a short time to a beauty subscription box, but never ended up keeping them for long. I can be quite pernickety and trying to use all the products in the box was something I found difficult. At the time I subscribed to the beauty box, I was looking to be introduced to more products and brands I might not have been aware of, but I don’t use too much makeup and a lot of the products in the box ended up not being something I really was looking for.
When I became vegan, I was tempted by the thought of getting monthly vegan boxes in the post. TheVeganKind offers two different kind of boxes: the monthly Lifestyle Box where you receive between 5 to 8 food and lifestyle cruelty free, vegan products (worldwide delivery available); or the Beauty Box which offers a mix of skin care, cosmetics and beauty products delivered every 3 months (UK delivery only).
Given my past experience with another beauty box, I didn’t want to take the chance that I would be struggling to use all the beauty and skin care products, I decided to go with the Lifestyle Box.
If I sound a bit too excited about these cookies, I’m sorry but I can’t help myself! I do have reason to be though, because
1) I’ve been looking for a chocolate chip cookie recipe even before I became vegan that gave me thick cookies that were crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside, and
2) I got my order from The Doughnut Family this morning and as I’m writing this, I’m indulging in a vegan chocolate glazed doughnut. Sooo good!
I’ve got a really sweet tooth and finding the treats I liked to eat before I became vegan has been something I’ve been determined to find, whether it’s bought or homemade by my own two hands. Luckily for me, my Aussie vegan friends have been at it for longer than I have and made the perfect chocolate chip cookies that are out of this world.
I’m afraid I’ve been a bit slack in the sewing part of my DIY blog. Apart from making baby blankets (see here), about 2 dozen burp cloths (here) and a hooded towel and wash cloth set (here), I’ve been taking a bit of a break from sewing too much. I made a very special vegan trip to Glasgow at the end of February. James Aspey, vegan activist from Australia, was going to be in Scotland for the first time to talk to over 150 vegans attending a workshop organised by Go Vegan Scotland. My very good friends from Australia had talked about and posted James’ speech on social media (you can watch the one minute version here) and I was touched and encouraged by his passion to speak on behalf of the animals being consumed either as food or products we use on a daily basis. I was also lucky to meet and have a quick chat with James at the Go Vegan Scotland stall at Buchanan Street in the afternoon.
When you’re in another city that offers such a wide variety of vegan-friendly or vegan only restaurants and cafes, you can’t go all the way to Glasgow and not sample all the good places you’ve heard so much about, so that’s exactly what I did…fitted in a few vegan bar/restaurants and a cafe to my day trip schedule!
The founder of the UK’s only fully independent and inclusive networking site for vegans, Lynn Jolly, is looking to open central Scotland’s first ever fully vegan animal sanctuary (see here).
The Glasgow ‘Veganpreneur’ who late last year launched Bohemian Hippy – the UK’s first official social networking site with integrated shop, resources and vegan directory – is using the money generated from the site to fund the project and is looking to get others involved in the project through crowdfunding and possible grants.
