Full Scottish breakfast, vegan style: review of BBL

A lot of vegans had recommended breakfast, brunch & lunch (also affectionately referred to as BBL) for their great vegan breakfast, so when my friend came to visit, I decided we had to try and stop by for breakfast while she was here.

The family run business started offering vegan options in addition to their non-vegan selection in 2015 and has been a huge hit with vegetarians and vegan alike. To reduce their carbon footprint, all their sausages (yes, including their vegan ones!) are made in their own kitchen. I was surprised but pleased to hear that a local restaurant in Edinburgh was able to offer homemade vegan sausages and was eager to give it a try.

There isn’t a lot of seating as BBL is situated on the bustling Pleasance where a lot of workers and students from the University of Edinburgh will quickly stop by to grab breakfast, brunch or lunch (get it?) while going on their way.

My friend and I were in no rush to be anywhere so when counter seats became available, we sat leisurely enjoying our full breakfast with mugs of tea while watching the world go by.

The family-run business has earned great reviews for their vegan offerings and I can certainly add my own positive note to their long list of raving reviews. Even my non-vegan friend ordered the vegan breakfast and enjoyed every morsel!

BBL shows how when it’s done right, there’s no need to pay an arm and a leg to get a good Scottish breakfast, especially for a vegan one. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and look forward to going back with other friends for breakfast, brunch or lunch. The portions (although it might not seem like much) was certainly filling and kept us full even up until lunch time. We ended up skipping lunch that day, we were that full, and weren’t in any hurry for dinner either.

breakfast, brunch & lunch is at 65 Pleasance, EH8 9RU and is open from 8:00am to 3:00pm. For any enquiries, call 0131 662 6969.
