Exploring the wonderful vegan offerings in and around Edinburgh can be a bit of a minefield, especially if you’re new like me. I’ve only been vegan for 3 and a half months, but I’ve enlisted the help of fellow vegans and bloggers Emma of Vegan Edinburgh and Lucie of Call Me Dumpling to help me explore all there is to eat (and drink) around Edinburgh!
For our first meet up, I brought along a friend who was visiting and we decided to try Affogato, a cafe and gelato shop on Queenferry Street (you can also read Emma’s review of Affogato here). I’d previously seen photos posted by other vegans of their gelato and vegan waffles (they were also at the Edinburgh Vegan Festival last year with their vegan gelato flavours, see my previous post about the festival here). It always makes me happy to find companies that offer almost as much (or the same) amount of vegan choices as there are for omnis.
The cafe offers a nice range of gelato (that changes daily), coffee/tea, juices as well as cakes and tray bakes, vegan and omni options! It’s not a very big cafe, but it also means that you can have a conversation with several friends without having to shout over each other. With the nice weather we’ve been having the last few days, it was also a nice day for customers to take their gelato away to enjoy the bright sunshine while it lasted.
When we arrived, the ladies behind the counter were very friendly and happy to show us all the options they’ve got for gelato and toppings. We were all really excited to try their vegan waffles!
About 8 of the gelato flavours were vegan friendly! You can also watch the wonderful wheel spin like you’re winning the gelato lottery!
Spoiled for choice with all the yummy vegan toppings and sauces
I’m not sure how much time we spent oohing and ahhing over all the choices we had, but eventually we decided on the most tempting flavours to go with our lovely vegan waffles.
Cookies and Cream gelato with bananas and cherry sauce with a waffle
Waffle with Chocolate sorbet, banana and salted caramel sauce
Cookies and Cream gelato, chocolate cookie bits and speculoos sauce over a waffle
I had a difficult time deciding (read greedy?) and went a bit over the top with 3 scoops of gelato. I figured I didn’t have lunch, so that would be okay. Right?

I think where I went wrong was to assume that there would be one waffle like you would normally get for dessert after a meal. I know not to underestimate Affogato the next time I come back with the OH in tow! They gave each of us 2 yummy waffles to go with our soft as dreams scoops of gelato. Since becoming vegan, I’ve not yet had the chance to fully enjoy the delights of vegan dessert, but this has got to top any dessert I’ve ever had, even before becoming vegan!
The waffles are nice and crispy on the outside, but so soft and gooey on the inside, so it perfectly absorbs the flavour of the gelato. It gets quite filling though, so if you’re worried about getting too full, I would recommend going for brunch, but make sure you’re ravenous because the waffle portion sizes are generous! I wasn’t sure what I was expecting prices to be, but between the 4 of us, we paid between £4 and £6 (depending on the number of scoops you order and how many toppings and sauces you choose), so I think it’s a more than reasonable price for what we all chose.
Affogato can be found at 36 Queensferry Street, EH2 4QS. They’re closed on Monday and Tuesday, but are open from 11:00am to 6:00pm from Wednesday to Sunday. You can call them on 0131 225 1444 or contact them through their Facebook page here.
